There
are three main reasons why this site has been set up. Firstly,
there is the Quest for Pijiu, an attempted explanation of which
can be found here. Secondly, there
is the opportunity which this site affords me to promote some
of my favourite things many of which are sadly neglected on the
internet (notably the work of Ian Godfrey, Margaret Brooker and
the Family Cat. Thirdly there is my need to have somewhere to
develop my clearly deficient Web design skills. Apologies in advance
to all those Web purists out there who will tear this site to
shreds. I will get better. Also apologies in advance to all those
friends who may not totally agree with my photo selection. I've
tried to pick out good photos, but...

What
is pijiu?

Pijiu
is the Chinese word for beer as written using the Pinyin (romanised)
system for writing Chinese characters. Pijiu.co.uk seemed like
an appropriate name for this site given the aims of the Quest
and my own fondness for beer. However, for the record I would
like to state that this site was not set up with the purpose of
endorsing any particular brands of beer although much like CAMRA. I
would like to see a world where small independent breweries can
survive alongside the multi national corporations and their all
too often bland offerings. I would also like to add that I am
keenly aware of the problems associated with alcohol misuse in
society and the valuable work of the all too few and under-resourced
alcohol services. I also welcome any efforts such as those currently
being pursued in Scotland to bring about harm reduction in relation
to alcohol. The links page contains
more information about the important work going on in this area.

It
may barely seem worth acknowledging the help of others given the
state of this site, but believe me it could have been even worse.
Special thanks go to Toby for whatever it is he does. It seems
to have a positive effect on all of us even if we can't really
understand it. Toby's sites are well worth checking out and can
be found on the links page here or through his homepage dacre.net.
Thanks also to everyone who either knowingly or unknowingly has
let me put up photos of them on this site. I will glady remove
any images on request and the same applies to the music samples
although I hope this will not be necessary. In case anyone is
wondering the main music samples on this site are taken from Manbreak's
first album Come and See, The Dead Kennedys album Fresh Fruit
for Rotting Vegetables, The Family Cat's album Tell 'em we're
surfin' and Cameo's single Word Up. You should be able to find
these through the music sites listed in the links page, but get
in touch with me if you are having problems. I may be able to
point you in the right direction. Any queries, comments etc. write
to Mark@pijiu.co.uk
